How does the Electricity System in Iceland work?

All electricity users get bills from two separate entities:

  1. A Distribution Company: There are five distribution companies in Iceland and each of them has a designated area where they manage the distribution of electricity. The Distribution Company is responsible for all equipment related to the delivery of the electricity, e.g. the meter. A user cannot choose which Distribution Company he/she/they are in business with.

  2. An Electricity Sales Company: There are eight Electricity Sales Companies in Iceland and Straumlind is one of them. These companies sell the electricity itself. A user can choose which Electricity Sales Company he/she/they are in business with.

A common ratio of the total electricity cost is 2/3 for distribution and 1/3 for electricity.
